The real news would be if Qualcomm really decides to get into GSM, while Ericsson would simultaneously enter IS-95. How's that for irony? Qcom has been slamming GSM as having no future and Ericy has been studiously ignoring IS-95. Now they both may be executing a U-turn. Of course this raises the question of why Qualcomm needs to do a patent-swap deal if it really has nothing to fear from Ericsson's CDMA patents. And whether Ericsson is realizing that time is running out for companies with no IS-95-based hanset development.

I'll try this one at a time, and I'm obviously speculating as usual..

Maybe Q wants to make ASICS for a "worldphone", GSM/IS95 phone, etc and needs GSM patents which says nothing re ERICY claims against Q.It doesn't mean they'll start making GSM phones and infrastructure IMO.

Maybe ERICY has no intention of getting into IS95 but needs patents for WCDMA, hence a trade, but you're probably right that they won't want to miss out on IS95 market.

So you're a little surprised at the turn things seem to be taking no?

Dave
