SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 10, 1997--SanDisk Corp. (NASDAQ:SNDK) announced today that it will supply CompactFlash (CF) storage cards to Hewlett-Packard Co. for its new Microsoft Windows CE-based palmtop PC -- the HP 320LX -- the industry's first CE-based handheld PC (HPC) with a built-in slot for CompactFlash (CF). CompactFlash, the small size flash storage card developed by SanDisk, is the global de facto standard for small removable storage cards. HP's usage of CompactFlash is one of the key ways in which HP is differentiating its palmtop PC from several other recently introduced CE-based handheld PCs. HP's new palmtop PC also has a 640X240 LCD display, 80 columns wide and 28 percent larger than other Windows CE handhelds. SanDisk's CF card, about one-fifth the size (in volume) of a standard PC card, is available in capacities ranging between 2 and 20MB. CompactFlash, an industry-standard ATA (AT Attachment) storage card, is "plug-and-play" in the new HP palmtop PC. Data captured on a new HP HPC can be easily moved to other computers as the CompactFlash card is inserted into a low-cost, passive PC adapter card which can then be placed in any standard ATA PC card slot in another computer. "CompactFlash storage is a convenient and versatile solution for the HP 320LX palmtop PC," said Kheng Joo Khaw, general manager of HP's Asia Pacific PC Division. "Data can be stored on CompactFlash leaving the PC card slot open for memory cards and other hardware such as a modem." Nelson Chan, SanDisk's vice president of marketing, said, "With its wide screen, support for Microsoft Windows CE and usage of CompactFlash cards, Hewlett-Packard's new palmtop PC will emerge as one of the world's best-selling CE-based handheld PCs. "Hewlett-Packard is one of the founding members of the CompactFlash Association, and its usage of CompactFlash cards is further endorsement of HP's commitment to CF and its support of CompactFlash as the industry standard for small size storage cards. We believe that HP has started a trend with the incorporation of a CF slot in a handheld PC." CompactFlash already has become the new film standard for digital cameras as seven new digital cameras have been recently introduced that use CF as digital film, and more than 18 new CF-based digital cameras are in design and development stages. Images taken with these digital cameras can be downloaded to an HP 320LX palmtop PC and viewed on the display by easily removing the CF card from the camera and slipping it directly into the palmtop PC's CF slot. The images also can be sent anywhere in the world from the computer. CompactFlash has been designed into more than 40 other products including medical monitors, audio recorders, network computers and GPS units. The new HP 320LX palmtop PC enables users to access and share documents with their Windows-based notebook computers and desktop PCs. It features automatic file synchronization with Windows 95 and Windows NT, which allows users to carry anywhere the same appointment calendar, phone lists and Microsoft Office files that are kept on a full-sized PC. HP's new computer will be available in early spring, 1997. Chan added that "the new HP 320LX palmtop PC has an ideal configuration for PC and storage cards. It has a full size PC card slot for an I/O or communications card and a much smaller slot for the CF card. This configuration takes up little space in the unit and allows designers to pack more features into a small system package." End-users also can use the full size PC card slot for a SanDisk Type II storage card -- capacities range between 2 and 150MB -- for additional storage. SanDisk Type II, Type III and CF cards are sold under the SanDisk label. SanDisk's Type II and CompactFlash cards also are sold worldwide by Hewlett-Packard under the HP label.
