A good programmer doesn't need source code to see how something works.

All you need is a good ICE and you can do pretty much anything you want.

EG numega.com makes something called the SoftIce. I have used it. It is very powerful. With SoftIce you can see how windows works without having the source code. I have uncovered bugs in windows source using SoftIce. I have used it to figure out how things work. All without the actual source in hand.
