Dave - There are hundreds of players, from the largest Japanese/Korean/US
to the smallest of university research groups. It is going to be impossible
to pick the companies that stand the greatest chance of making big bucks
because this is probably still an open race. Logic would dictate that
the big organisations stand the biggest chances, but judging by the difficulty
of what needs to be achieved, it is possible that any one of a number of
small players might make a significant breakthrough, in which case all bets
are off !

The guy who started this strand - Bob Mackey - is the guru here, and he
works for a small-ish player called Candescent. He believes they have a
chance, but I'll bet that any one of a number of players have the same
optimism.

The problem that needs to be solved is how to get the production costs
down. (Let's assume that product quality can be achieved). The target
is to produce a large flat panel display (say 15"+) at a cost of around
$10. I believe (as a non-expert !) that the current costs are around
10-50x this level. A certain amount of the needed reductions will come
from volume (a sort of chicken and egg situation between volume/price !)
but some major technology improvements are also needed.

The one thing I picked up from earlier filings in this strand is that a
safer bet might be the comapnies providing the process equipment to these
players - If I remember correctly, the names RFP and AKT appeared earlier in
this context.

I'm as interested as anyone in finding the right names, and my "pet" theory
at the moment is that Chips & Tech are repositioning themselves to overlap
their graphics controller technology with the broader flat-panel market.
This is a theory I am still trying to validate.......
