Tench,

Re: 20% battery life is significant.

It sure is significant, I agree with you.

But I think that lots of folks who want a sub $2K laptop will have to compromise. Either you go with a 233/266 PII or you go with the AMD part which will be much higher performance and support 3d Now as well.

Personally, I would rather go with the faster more powerfull chip.
But clearly there are different segments of the market.

Quite a few folks buy laptops with k6-2 400's in them using the desktop chips, because they like the conveneience of having a mobile solution.

With regards to the fall out issue.
My guess is that with the 2.4V they are able to get vast majority to pass at 400Mhz speed grade.
Otherwise we will see mobile k-3's at severe market discounts to Intel mobile prices.

By the way what are the winstone numbers for Dixon mobiles.
That's the number you need to compare not PIII's with 512K caches.

Overall, I guess we will see what happens in next few weeks and i agree the K-3 is a good chip. The key with AMD of course is wether they can yield and ship enough quickly enough. I suspect demand will not be the short term problem.

Regards,

Kash
