Pioneer looks to benefit from MediaOne deal..............

cableworld.com

GI chairman-CEO Ed Breen admitted the company will refocus its MediaOne product offerings by migrating to a DVB-compliant OpenCable DVB platform.

"What's nice about that is that it's a lot of the development that we're doing for our European product anyway," Breen said. "It will work out real nice from a development standpoint for us over time."

Another probable MediaOne winner is Pioneer New Media Technologies Inc., which, in addition to building Explorer 2000-compatible boxes for Time Warner Cable, is allied with Canal+, DiviCom and C-Cube Microsystems Inc., all major players in the MediaOne order.

"Right now we're meeting with a variety of MSOs to explain that product," said George Applegate, Pioneer's cable/communications marketing manager, who said the market shift is obvious.

Last year it was more like 'We'd like to do digital when the time is right.' This year it's 'We're going to do digital. We need it now,'" he said.
