When I remember my childhood religion, it is through a haze of awe, a mist of incense, and with a frisson of fear. I was raised in the old Catholic tradition --lots of mysticism and miracles. I lost my faith after Vatican II when they blew up my bridge to God by removing all the ritual that had been my means of getting to Him. It felt like a personal betrayal and I never could figure out how to approach Him after that. So I gave it all up. Then years later, after my divorce, I had what I guess some would call a rebirth of my faith and it was wonderful. That lasted until a couple of years ago, when I looked around and thought, "Huh! What am I doing here?" So maybe it's a cyclical thing for me. I know that I can't accept that physical death is the end of us. I understand that atheists think that's just a way of comforting myself or refusing to face an unattractive reality, but someone wrote something I love once-
I won't give the source without his permission but I respect him a great deal:

<< But since we don't FEEL
meaningless, and since the very idea of being pointless causes our minds
to rebel, I'd say we have ontological or intuitive evidence that there
is a reason to our lives and our minds. ( as beauty is intuitive and
ontological) Just as Christianity argues. We are purposeful creations of
God, not meaningless anomalies in a pointless universe, that could as
well not-exist as exist.

It's a starting place for me.
