Microsoft Windows NT Server Strengthens Position as Top Server Operating System
1996 Shipments Grow at Six Times the Rate of Novell NetWare or UNIX;
62 Percent of New Intranet Sites Deployed on Windows NT Server
REDMOND, Wash., Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT)
today announced new data showing that the Microsoft(R) Windows NT(R) Server
network operating system was the world's best-selling server operating system
in 1996. With its built-in Web server, Internet Information Server (IIS),
Windows NT Server is the leading platform for intranets and the Internet.
According to the latest sales report from International Data Corp., sales
of Windows NT Server grew by 85 percent in 1996, or about six times the rate
of Novell NetWare. In another analysis, done by Computer Intelligence (CI)
based on its extensive surveys of users in the United States and Western
Europe, the rapid customer adoption of Windows NT Server has driven the
overall growth for network operating systems.
"We were very impressed with the tremendous growth of Windows NT Server
sales in 1996," said Aaron Goldberg, executive vice president of CI. "This
performance clearly shows a strong acceptance for Windows NT Server 4.0, and
our analysis shows that it was the No. 1-shipping server operating system in
1996, outshipping all other products in the new Intel-based server market."

business," said Jim Allchin, senior vice president of the personal and
business systems group at Microsoft. "This growth is a direct result of
customers' acceptance of Windows NT Server, with its built-in Internet
Information Server, as the platform for their intranets and Internet sites."
The Platform of Choice for Intranets and the Internet
A recent study by Telecommunication Research Group (TRG) shows that
Windows NT Server is the leading platform for intranets, representing
62 percent of new intranet server installations during the last quarter of
1996. In addition, the report shows that Windows NT Server was the
No. 1 server operating system for Internet sites during the same time period,
with 51 percent of new Web servers being installed on Windows NT Server. This
is more than five times the number of Web servers being deployed by its
nearest UNIX competitor. The same report shows that IIS is the Web server of
choice for intranets, capturing 33 percent of the market, as compared to
24 percent for Netscape Web servers and 10 percent for Lotus Domino.
Enterprise customers that have deployed Windows NT Server, with its
built-in IIS, as the platform for their corporate intranets include The Boeing
Co., Compaq Computer Corp., Consolidated Edison Company of New York,
Continental Airlines Inc., General Motors Corp., HarperCollins Publishers
Inc., Merrill Lynch & Company Inc., NASDAQ, Nissan Motor Corp., Pennzoil Co.,
Taco Bell Corp., Southern Co., Turner Broadcasting Systems Inc. and Wal-Mart
Stores Inc.
According to Netcraft, a United Kingdom-based consultancy
(http://www.netcraft.com/survey/), Windows NT Server with IIS is the most
widely used commercial Web platform for Internet sites, accounting for
23 percent of commercial Web servers deployed. In contrast, Netscape's most
popular server, Netscape Communications server, accounts for 13 percent of
commercial Web servers deployed.
