2/10/97 - Europe - Novell & Compaq Team On Reseller Centers
MUNICH, GERMANY, 1997 FEB 10 (Newsbytes) -- By Sylvia Dennis.
Novell Inc. [NASDAQ-NNM:NOVL] has announced it is extending its
European relationship with Compaq Computer Corp. [NYSE:CPQ], opening
four "Novell open network facilities," centers in France, Germany, and the UK.

According to Novell, the centers, which are located at Novell"s headquarters in the UK, France, and Germany, as well as at Compaq"s Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) headquarters in Munich, are designed to act as "proof of concept" centers to which customers can be shown the complete range of Novell networking systems, as well as Compaq hardware.

Plans call for the facilities to offer large corporations, consulting organizations, systems integrators, and their clients, a permanent environment to perform a range of activities using Novell and Compaq products, including proof-of-concepts, network simulations, and demonstrations.

Jacqui Forrest, group market development manager with Novell, explained that the networking of large corporations is critical to the successful running of its business operations, and, as a result, "they need to be able to deploy scaleable, cost-effective enterprise networking systems with confidence.

"We"ve teamed up with Compaq in this venture to demonstrate the excellent technological capabilities which a marriage of the two platforms provides to both customers and systems integrators," she said.

Plans call for the centers to demonstrate Novell"s networking software
technology, including IntranetWare Novell Directory Services (NDS),
GroupWise, and ManageWise, as well as other Internet and intranet products from companies such as Oracle and Netscape.

Networks at the centers will run entirely on Compaq ProLiant 5000
rack-mounted servers, which include Compaq"s SmartStart and Insight
Manager systems management software, along with Deskpro desktop PCs,
LTE 5000 portable PCs and Compaq"s Netelligent range of networking
products.

I have 2 questions:

1. Did Novell screw up Groupwise?.
2. Is the recent stock slump tied to the major hit the networking hardware stocks (COMS, CSCO, ...etc) took?.
