Cisco has been a worse monopoly than Microsoft for several years. You wouldn't imagine the amount of times that I've gone into international distributor prospect accounts with better products, prices & performance only to be told "confidentially" 'sorry, we can't carry your products because if we do, we will lose our Cisco discount and support'.

In one instance, the Cisco regional director called one of my distributors and demanded that he fire the product manager that had recently signed a competitive product (Ascend). In another instance an Australian prospect was close to signing, backed out on the next day… Cisco had threatened to drop them from their Cisco Gold reseller status it they signed with a small start-up company that had a product that even attempted to compete with their 7xxx series products. The end result? Contract discussions terminated.

No monopoly? Nonsense! Cisco makes Bill Gates look like an amateur in the networking world.
