Your phrase about individuals who understand a politician's true character brings up many questions in my mind about mass psychology,
marketing, and media influence.

However for a simple retort lets look at someone closer to home Ronald Reagan. He was both admired and reviled by many and ,unlike the people I posted before, plenty of information was freely available to his constituents about him and his policies during his tenure.
What I notice is that there tends to be forgiveness for a politician
if he appears to be "on your side". I think this is an indelible part
of human nature.
