ed, sure, Linux is a hackers OS. Put together by a bunch of passionate hackers. I agree that it's not a real OS. But one thing Linux does better than Windows is reliability. Servers running Linux don't crash, that's a fact.
Windows are not the best OS out there in the world, read some academic paper about object oriented OS, policy vs. mechanism in OS design, how to design distributed system, how to support synchronization in threads, what are the differences between capabilities and access controlled list, and when to use which, how to support portability, scalability, how to resolve memory coherence problem in a cluster environment... Do windows do the best job in each and every of this criteria? No! No! No!!! Not even close. If using all these criteria, windows isn't even a real OS. There are some fantastic academic research project out there in the last 20 years that easily beat windows in these areas. I suggest you do some serious reading in OS development trend in the last 20 years before you bash someone else and tout Windows as the one and only true real OS.
These Linux promoters are either too naive or have a brain damage !!!!! Linux is a toy , but not a real OS for day to dy operation.
