The devil is in the details.

Reminds me of the Larsen cartoon showing scientists at a chalk board trying to prove a theorum. One writes in "Then a miracle happens" to solve the equation.

The miracle assumption in this article assumes MCI will deploy Millions of users of DSL overnight.

Ain't gonna happen. TCI and @home are deploying (and working on simplifying) a relatively easier technology with their cable modems. They are deploying as fast as they can and could be as high as 2 Million by the end of 1999. DSL will be lucky to have a third of that.

Cable Modems are likely to be the Market leaders for some time to come.

IT *is* interesting to see the carefully chosen Product America Online has selected for MCI >"COMPUSERVE" not exactly top of the line.

BUT I THINK THE ARTICLE IS MISSING THE BIG POINT
America Online is adding 1 million users every 40 days WITHOUT THE BIG BANDWIDTH. ATHM Is losing money on their installations because users need a cable modem and don't want to pay for them, AOL is wise to wait. By the end of 1999 ATHOME = 2 Million Users AOL = 30 Million Users and at that level they can buy their way into whatever market they want. As the Irish say "Time enough"
