Although Spectrum has come off of a rough year where the company didn't meet revenue and earnings targets, they did manage to build a lot of value into Spectrum's business and accomplished a lot of great things during 98. All departments contributed to a textbook execution of the C6x launch, and the company beat all major competitors to market with working, production quality products. The Alex integration has been smooth and is a great addition to the team. Spectrums' acquisition of SHARC capabilities was timely as TI was not putting out a next generation floating point device right away and the company knew there was goingv to be a gap. The decision to stop relling LSI boards created a transition from a dependence on LSI products: revenue from resale of old LSI [Loughborough/BWSI] dropped off significantly as expected, from over 40% of revenue in 1997 to only 13% of revenue in 98. 98 reepresented a transition year from resller to selling their own in-house designed products at higher margins. The staff at Spectrum are very proud of that fact and the reality is Spectrums products offer more funtionality than those of BWSI and those sales and revenues will return. The company is now in control of its technology development and products. The software team is putting together the next generation software product, a process that was started last year.
Spectrum has more value than just its revenue and earnings projections and more shareholders need to understand this: TI and ADI do!
The pr firm that was hired has a track records of improving understanding of a companies underlying value and improving {market cap]. The "f" is also being looked at and the company may petition NASDAQ for removal of the "f"
The reality is that business intake is good contracts have and will be one. The global slowdown will end. Nothing has changed regarding the intellectual value, talent, and long term prospects of the company. I share everyones pain re. the stock price. The company also is keenly aware of the need to refocus its attention on creating fair market value for the companies assets. There may be continued short term pain, as the company will focus on creating value and refrain from forward looking statements, but I think it is far out weighed by the expected long term gain. The somber tone of the cc reflects the companies new attitude ("show me the money"). I will continue to buy stock in the company as I see the future of Spectrum, the dsp solution industry, and the prospects for return to 30+%/yr growth. I also see a company with a market cap that is IMO rediculously low given its prospects.
Regards,
Norden
