BT is a bacteria or a bacteria product. It can be applied either way. It targets lepidopteran insects (butterflies and moths) in their larval state. It is a naturally occurring bacteria and will attack larva when they reach high densities. The advantage of putting in the plant is that the insect can't hide inside the stem of the plant.
