The News Is Small, But Important...
Given the recent privacy flap surrounding Intel's Pentium III "ID chip", Wave's move to commission a Georgetown study and join TRUSTe is VERY, VERY SMART.
The fact is, Wave is best positioned to navigate these straits between the need for privacy on the one hand... and the e-tailer's need to avoid fraud. In several ways, the Wave solution is a privacy advocate's best friend for e-commerce and a terrific ally for online merchants... at the same time.
Intel did us all a HUGE FAVOR by smoking out the privacy concerns (which are legitimate) and helping to define the privacy debate in specific terms.
Again, I have to salute the PR savvy of The Spragues. It appears that not only do they have a winner in technology, but they are also excellent at recognizing public relations and positioning opportunities as they surface. Kudos. And, should anyone question the value of GOOD PR, let me just say let's not confuse GOOD PR with cheesey, insubstantial releases.
In closing, I should note that TRUSTe is a respected organization and excellent WAVX affiliation. For e-commerce customers--at least according to fairly recent online shopping surveys from Intelliquest and others--transaction security and privacy are two of their top five most important issues. Thus, all first-order e-commerce sites have a posted PRIVACY POLICY and TRANSACTION SECURITY section.
