Compaq will be the long-term winner in the pc war. Dell's problem this quarter is a foreshadowing of what is to come. They have done nothing to deal with the impending commoditization of computers, and margins keep shrinking. Compaq's purchase of Digital was a risky but very smart move in that they have moved out of the pure pc market and into a total service market. Now companies can buy everything from one vendor, and service margins are very large. Dell needed to make a similar acquisition but didn't want to disrupt their growth. So, Compaq paid last year (shares fell or were stagnant) to be able to thrive in the future. Dell is starting to pay now, and I'm not sure what their strategy will be to deal with the problem.
