I-Link Subsidiary MiBridge Provides Key IP Compression Technology to Lucent Technologies PR Newswire - February 23, 1999 08:17
DRAPER, Utah, Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- I-Link Inc. (Nasdaq: ILNK), an IP (Internet Protocol) telephony and enhanced communications company, today announced its wholly owned subsidiary MiBridge Inc. has provided IP compression and encoding technology for integration into Lucent Technologies' PacketStar(TM) IP Gateway 1000 product.
MiBridge develops voice and fax encoding software and feature-rich APIs (application programming interfaces) that can be integrated into a complete system to provide a key component in building multi-service IP gateways. This software also conforms to the ITU (International Telecommunications Union) H.323 protocol that defines how multimedia devices communicate.
The PacketStar IP Gateway 1000, which is based on Lucent's PortMaster(R) 4 Integrated Access Concentrator platform and ComOS(R) operating system, is a fault-tolerant, next generation voice-over-IP (VoIP) platform on which to build robust differentiated voice and fax services over IP networks. With the PacketStar IP Gateway 1000, service providers are able to design virtually 99.999 percent reliable VoIP networks that can carry up to 2 million voice or fax calls per day -- more than the entire industry's VoIP calls per day.
"Lucent's PacketStar IP Gateway 1000 specifications have the potential to compete very successfully in the market for network service providers," said Dror Nahumi, MiBridge president. "Combining our enhanced IP compression and encoding technology with the Lucent PacketStar product will help service providers offer a wider range of services for their consumers at a substantial cost savings."
Lov Kher, general manager of Lucent Technologies' PacketStar IP Telephony Solutions, said, "We are glad that MiBridge has developed leading-edge voice/fax compression technology for the PacketStar IP Gateway 1000. The MiBridge voice and fax compression technology will be useful for Internet service providers making millions of calls across the Internet."
John Edwards, chairman and CEO of I-Link, said working with a company like Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) underscores I-Link's commitment to furthering development of markets for next-generation products and services that are not available through traditional platforms and networks. "I-Link's relationship with Lucent is one that will help ensure future interoperability across multi-service networks and providers," Edwards said.
MiBridge gateway products have been developed jointly with elemedia, a Lucent Technologies business venture.
