re: "AOL is not an "allternative" ATHM - they have no broadband access, so they will have to deal or be doomed to being a thing of the past."

After hooking up ATHM, what's to prevent me from using the "cheaper" rates for bring-your-own access AOL ($9.95/mo) and piggyback on top of the ATHM broadband? Once I have the big pipe to my house, AOL software can just "run" through that pipe.

To me, "ATHM vs. AOL" is a viable debate only if you're talking strictly about access fees & speed, and only if you're looking at AOL as just another ISP to get you connected to the net.

"Content" debates are entirely different, and with that you have to open the competition to the entire web (Yahoo, etc).

With each company I think it's important to draw that wide line between access to the web and content, because they're two entirely different businesses.

After all, when I finally get ATHM hooked up, my default home page is still going to be http:/my.yahoo.com. :) I don't care where ATHM wants to drive me once I'm connected.
