Another article in WSJ today raises these points:

Even the best of the independent booksellers who managed to survive the chains are now succumbing to competition from net booksellers like AMZN.

Overall book sales in USA are flat.

"42% of visitors to our [online] store have seen
something and gone to a bricks-and-mortar" store to buy it, says
Mary Morouse, Amazon's vice president of merchandising.
Amazon sells 70% to 80% of its books from the "backlist" -- books between six months and a year old.

Academics and businesses seem to have a propensity to buy books on the web. (It may be that it is just easier.)
