Jim, re:The K6-III runs at 2.4v, the Pentium III runs at 2.0/1.8. While this is significant to a technogeek like yourself, this is NOT significant to the user.
You just don't get it, do you? It's the cost side of the equation. AMD is INCREASINGLY falling behing Intel in process technology, manufacturing, etc. K6-3, K7 will both INCREASE AMD's cost structure. AT THE SAME TIME, AMD won't be able raise ASPs, because they are stuck selling at the low-end (why?, combination of Intel putting out faster & faster technology, brand name, reputation, etc.) It doesn't take a genius to figure out what's going to happen to AMD's bottom line.
As for K7 to the rescue, I hate to see what a K7 on AMD's .25m process looks like. It wont be pretty and it wont be a threat to Intel. K7 on .18 wont be here until 2000 at the earliest...and so it goes
