Network Interface Card Market Grew More Than 9 Percent in Q498;
Gigabit NICs is the Fastest Growing Segment at 104 Percent
BW - 07:59 a.m. Feb 23, 1999 Eastern

NEWTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 23, 1999--The Network Interface Card
market experienced another quarter of robust sequential growth in units shipped in the
Q4 of 1998.

The NIC market grew 9.5 percent sequentially to 14.1 million units shipped as a result
of higher connect rates worldwide for bundled NICs, the continuing shift to Fast
Ethernet and the emerging SOHO segment, according to Cahners In-Stat Group, a
high-technology market research firm.

Cahners In-Stat Group also found that: -- From a market that barely existed a year ago,
the Gigabit

Ethernet NIC market is the strongest and grew 104 percent in
Q498, -- With more vendors shipping Gigabit NICs in 1999, quickly dropping
prices and the emergence of Gigabit over Copper NICs in the
latter part of 1999, the Gigabit NIC market is poised to continue
its strong growth, -- The Fast Ethernet segment grew as a percentage of total NICs
shipped, moving from 62 percent of total shipments in Q398 to
66 percent in Q498, -- The top two Fast Ethernet NIC vendors, 3Com and Intel,
enjoyed growth and combined account for 82 percent of all Fast Ethernet
NICs shipped, up from approximately 78 percent in Q3.

"The fourth quarter of 1998 was a strong one for the NIC market for the same reasons
1998 was a strong year overall," said Mike Wolf, industry analyst with Cahners In-Stat
Group.

"Companies large and small are realizing connectivity is a crucial part of the platform
and this continues to drive demand for NICs worldwide." The NIC market grew 17.5
percent in 1998. Wolf wrote the report Q498 Network Interface Card Market Analysis.
