02/16/1999 - Zap Signs Portuguese Distribution Deal

2/16/99, Sebastopol, Calif. - Electric bike and scooter-maker ZAP Power Systems announced today it has signed a distribution contract with Veiculos Electricos of Lisbon, Portugal and received an initial order worth $50,000 for electric bikes and scooters. A ZAP Outlet store will be opened next month in Lisbon that will offer sales and rentals of electric bikes, according to Veiculos Electricos Director Carlos Alegria, who is a professor at the Technical University of Lisbon and the owner of several other Lisbon businesses. He plans to open additional bike-and-scooter outlets in northern and southern Portugal.
Alegria states his main objective is to reduce pollution and promote
electric transportation. This would meet objectives of the Lord Mayor of Lisbon who has proposed that several of Lisbon's city roads be closed to internal-combustion vehicles. Sebastopol, Calif. - based ZAP has already sold more than 20,000 of its electric bikes, bike kits and scooters to customers throughout the world.
