I agree with the first 2 paragraphs of your post. It explains rather well why there is such a huge demand for US treasuries.

As for professionals unloading at dips, please allow me to point out that for the past few years professionals have miserably underperformed the market. Given the present mutual fund turnover rates I suspect that it is professionals who flip-flop way more than individual investors. As for margin, surely LTCM was not an investment club made up of individual investors?
