When I was living up in the mountains I used to take Joey out mushroom hunting 3-4 times a week during the rainy season. A number of different varieties, which I know only by native names: one round, sort of a puffball, delicious when small, too strong to eat when large, but a single big one tossed into a soup, stew, or sauce would give the whole thing a magnificent flavor. There was one that came out early, with the first few rains, they'd only be up for a week, but when they were we'd harvest by the sackful, give them away to all the neighbors. Plenty of others, including some with interesting effects. Easily identifiable, whether you're avoiding them or seeking them out. |
