Thank you Gord. according to the night school book you got part good and part bad YES to "And if I simply removed the soup from the heat source and let it cool, it would eventually freeze but much more slowly than if I threw it on the snow. There would be a difference in the crystal size and characteristics in the ice crystals in the soup depending on exactly what kind of soup it was and on exactly how fast or slowly it cooled and froze. And of course on exactly how much water was left in the soup at the point that I took it off the burner. BUT YOUR CONCLUSION is off. you see if you cool a peice of hot glass to fast what happens Gord ?? it shatters right ?? it's the same for crystals like diamonds what do you prefer for your diamonds ? A slow cool off or something hard & fast like a underground explosion PIPE ? Also if the temp drops fast would that not affect the chemical reactions you allude to in regards to the CRYSTALS ?? the best would be that nothing changes to fast here hence I suppose the so called diamond stability feild the underground vein like WSP is the best place to find good rocks but most are small deposits but very rich sometimes very rich because enclosed in rock that is heated it's self not only HOT in temp but also chemically altered hence the alteration of the enclosing granite the top of the sill if i recall - the alteration being mostly caused by heat. all this is sealed underground and cools down in temp over a period of years remaining stable in the form of big complete <> crystals. the best for BIG FANCIES - but that is not the point : SEEING IS BELIVING - SHOW US THE ROCKS
