I haven't seen anyone mention VFI's new product premiere at DEMO97. For those of you that don't know, DEMO97 is the top computer industry conference keyed to emerging technology. The "Premiere" designation means that it has been identified as one of the top 8 new products.
VeriFone's Personal ATM "Premieres" at DEMO 97
Leading Payment Company to Demonstrate the Power of In-Home Electronic Cash Withdrawals
INDIAN WELLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 10, 1997-- Verifone Inc , today announced that its Personal ATM(TM) -- a hand-held smart card consumer appliance that brings the convenience of a traditional bank ATM directly to the consumer -- has been selected by the executive producer of Demo 97 as one of the most innovative new products of 1997.
Showcased here on the opening day of one of the industry's most influential technology conferences, the Personal ATM is a smart card reader/writer that will operate together with VeriFone's VeriSmart(TM) client/server system to allow consumers to connect to their bank account, via any standard telephone line, and download electronic cash securely and conveniently in the privacy of their home or office.
"The advent of smart cards combined with consumers' increased use of digital technology, creates new opportunities for bank customers to access their money securely and conveniently from the comfort of their home," said Thomas J. Kilcoyne, vice president and general manager of the Consumer Systems Division at VeriFone, Inc. "The potential market for smart card technology is tremendous. VeriFone has built a powerful, open solution to enable others to capitalize on that opportunity. We plan to partner with numerous consumer appliance manufacturers to help make smart card technology readily available to consumers."
Loading electronic cash is expected to be only one of many applications of the Personal ATM. The power of the Personal ATM will come from the VeriSmart System - a software-centric solution, utilizing Java(R) which will allow flexibility for future applications as the smart card market evolves. The VeriSmart System is designed to provide a direct connection between a financial institution, a merchant, or a service provider and their customers, allowing them to load electronic cash, access airline loyalty miles, individual healthcare insurance, telephone and utility account information, retail merchants and a range of other personal services -- any time, anywhere.
"The U.S. smart card market is rapidly evolving, largely under the leadership of banks and credit card associations, along with companies such as VeriFone," Kilcoyne said. "Our Personal ATM and the VeriSmart system will enable the technology industry to get on board easily and economically while adding vital new services to their customers."
Only eight products are awarded "Premiere" status at Demo 97 out of the hundreds of products reviewed, according to Executive Producer, Chris Shipley. "We choose products that are expected to have the greatest impact on the personal technology market in the coming year," continued Shipley. "VeriFone's Personal ATM is an exciting first in bringing smart card technology to the consumer marketplace and it has the potential to significantly change the way we use cash for everyday purchases."
