oh good, you sell the stuff. always happy to hear from salespeople closer to the action.

>>The cost of building vrsn's business is going to be much higher since they are building these centers.

Up-front costs, yes. But customers subscribe and therefore revenues come in every month and profitability scales with size. Moreover, VRSN can consistently make its earnings estimates as they can know how much they can spend since they know what revenues will be (because all they have to do is add up the subscriptions).

>>Fact is, some companies despise outsourcing anything related to security

True, very large companies that like to employ large in-house IT departments may want to do this and they will buy a kit from someone like an ENTU.

However, what if you have a supply-chain certificate so that you, as a customer, can go into your suppliers relational database and check availability or the specifications of product XYZ? But lets say the supplier wants to time-stamp your use of the extranet as well as monitor how the e*commerce transaction you just placed did (did it arrive on time to the right place etc..). You are going to need an IT department to monitor this but why (unless you just like your IT department that much) bother going through the process of building the stuff when you can get continuously enhanced certificate technology from a trusted source cheaply. If you don't trust Verisign then that is your right but if their job is security, you can bet that they are staying on top of making sure your privacy is not being sacrificed.

>>I have spoken to several of my clients who said entu was much more responsive and a more friendly company to deal with.

ok, but Netscape just decided to push VRSN for enterprise security BECAUSE Verisign committed to high standards of service. Netscape is a key player in intranet/extranet technology so that is a pretty good endorsement.

Let's just review here:
Microsoft is an investor
Netscape committed to Verisign
Intel is an investor
Network Associates views VRSN as an ally
Network Associates views ENTU as competition
Security Dynamics is using VRSN as its engine in its KEON product

ENTU is doing very well. However, there are lots of competitors in PKI software and none in VRSN's outsourced space. You are right "They are both very very very different"
