No, it's not always wise when government makes business decisions. Neither can it be said for consumers making business decisions. It is the question of $$$$ efficiency here. If a government supported standard can lead to more compatabilities, more power to the consumers. Just look at what GSM has done in the rest of world. And in the US, digital cellular system dragged years behind. The consumers of this greatest, freest, and most successful country suffered. But there are also pros for the US method. CDMA was born in the US, not Europe. Why, because Europe didn't allow a second standard. China's situation is different from those of US and Europe years ago. China is a developing country, where $$$$ should be used as effective as possible. It's not inventing any new system, it's just choosing between the options. Considering all of the spending on GSM, not bring in CDMA is a wise decision.
