greg, re: "I'm no apologist for Bill but this 40% figure can't be right can it?" - Yes it can...

Assuming a population of 250M 40% = 100M. Not sure what Bill is worth, (today), but let's say $50B. 50,000M / 100M = $500 of net worth for every man, woman and child in this 40%.

If Bill is worth 60B or 70B, the numbers change to $600 and $700 respectively.

I did some fact checking on this today and I believe it. Most people live their paychecks. Most live with family or rent with little savings. I think 27% of us are children or teens, 25% of us are in poverty. Of the remainder home equity is forms the bulk of held wealth.

Holding wealth just isn't a very popular thing. For most of us there are critical needs that must be financed in the here and now. There are very, very few wealth holders in reality. Of those that do, the amount of wealth rises sharply exponentially toward the top.

And Gates is the by far the wealthiest.

Jeff

P.S. By the way, Bill is worth some $87 billion lately. He made about a cool billion just today. Also the U.S. population has climbed to 272 million...
