I see the possibility of a Y2K sell-off as very real. Market moves on psychology more than anything else. Whether the effect of Y2K is real or not, the fact is that the perception that it could be a problem will drive the market down. The event is an unknown at this point. Why am I going to risk my money in the market just to see whether the event is real or not. I'd would rather pull it out mid-year (ahead of the masses) and wait for 2000. The only risk at that point is that I miss out on 6-months worth of a market gain--yet that would be mitigated by 6-months worth of money market returns. If Y2K is dud, then I'm back in the market first week of Jan '00. However, RMBS will be accumulated on any sign of weakness during that time...this story is a matter of when, not if, and I'm a very patient man.
