Thanks guys for that informative article but it just reinforces my point. Other then SSE optimized instructions (which I grant you do show real improvement) this is just a marketing play. The performance IMPROVEMENT just is not there either in floating point or integer. I wish he would have put the PIII450 numbers on that chart because if you NORMALIZE the clock rate on the PIII to 450 and compare that to PII running at 450... the PIII is no breakthrough technology, just a PII with nice SSE optimized instruction support and a higher price tag. I don't think the SSE improvements alone deserve this mega launch. AS your article says:
"...even though the Pentium III 450 might seem to be just as fast as a Pentium II 450, when it comes time to play
Quake 3, you can expect your friend with the P3 450 to get a nice little advantage over you in performance. "

Good luck all you Quake 3 players...We all know that they make up most of the high end market these days anyway.

Long INTC but PIII is not much in terms of Bang/$ for the serious user.
