Bid and Ask question...

When there are a lot of buys coming in at the ask, why do the MM's try to hold the bid down, and when would they raise the bid??? Are wider spreads better or worse??

Also, When do the MM's have to raise the ask. If there are alot of buys coming in at the ask, why do't they raise the ask??
