I believe both XLNX and ALTR depend on others for the majority of their fabrication. They could probably provide some ASIC design services, but they will not challenge LSI, IBM, TI, the Japanese, and the Taiwanese in the ASIC manufacturing business.

FPGAs will be around for a long time because of ease of use and time to market. Heck, PALs are still around. But FPGA applications are more than ever being limited by cost and performance issues.
