Imprint Entertainment Announces Dramatic Mini-Series and More Specials for the New Year; Company Closes Out 1998 With Two Holiday Specials Business Wire - December 15, 1998 06:16 NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 15, 1998--Imprint Entertainment, the 16-month old division of Imprint Records (OTC BB:IMPR), will begin the New Year as co-producers of both a dramatic mini-series and a prime time special for network television.
"Along with the holiday specials we produced for this season, these endeavors are of a caliber we feel to be of paramount importance to Imprint Entertainment's future," said Roy Wunsch, the company's Chairman/CEO. "We are fortunate to be able to align Imprint with ranking stars and production personnel with integrity, experience and talent - individuals and companies who consistently strive for excellence."
According to Imprint Entertainment President Bud Schaetzle, the American Country six-hour/three-night mini-series will be an extensive project chronicling the birth of country music and the establishment of Nashville as Music City USA. It is currently targeted for broadcast on CBS during the 1999-2000 season.
Co-produced by Imprint Entertainment and Los Angeles-based Avenue Pictures Television, the American Country mini-series concept includes plans to pair established actors with heritage and contemporary country music personalities in dramatic roles. Executive producers are Schaetzle and Avenue Pictures Television Chairman Cary Brokaw and President J. J. Jamieson. Co-executive producers are Wunsch and former CBS Television executive Randy Haberkamp, who teamed with Imprint last year.
Award-winning screenwriter Ronni Kern, who wrote the CBS miniseries The Kennedy Women, is adapting Schaetzle's American Country companion book for the screen.
"Television audiences have repeatedly proven their affection for country music stories, but no one has tackled a project of this scope and grandeur," Jamieson said. "American Country will be the quintessential story, not just about country music, but about America throughout the 20th Century."
"There is great synergy between Imprint Entertainment and Avenue Pictures Television, said Brokaw, the producer of such films as The Player , Drugstore Cowboy, and Restoration. "The unique resources at Imprint are most impressive and are critical to this project, which is why we are looking at possible joint development of other movie projects."
Stars Over Mississippi, a one-hour prime time special produced by Imprint in association with London-based Ardent Productions, will be presented nationally on PBS by Hollywood's KCET-TV in 1999. Celebrating the small-town tradition of "lending a hand," the show's central event is the biannual "Entertainment For Education" benefit concert staged by Hollywood super-agent Sam Haskell in his hometown of Amory, Mississippi. The show stars Ann Margret, Marilu Henner, Bryan White, Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr., Tom Arnold, Pam Tillis, Diahann Carroll, Nell Carter, and Debbie Allen.
For the first time Imprint will be working with Dolly Parton on a one-hour special (details to be announced in the coming weeks). "Dolly has created a very special concept which is being shaped with the help of Imprint Entertainment," Wunsch said. "Bud and I are incredibly excited to be working with this 'one of a kind' superstar."
"A Classic Christmas With Martina McBride," a one-hour holiday special starring one of country music's premiere vocalists, was produced by Imprint Entertainment for The Nashville Network (TNN) and aired earlier this month. Taped at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, the special featured McBride presenting songs from her new record White Christmas and performances by groundbreaking country star K.T. Oslin, rock legend Darlene Love, and the prestigious Nashville Symphony Orchestra.
For the second year, Imprint's Schaetzle, Kathie Lee Gifford and Frank Gifford are executive producers of popular television personality Kathie Lee Gifford's holiday special. Wunsch and Imprint's Phillip Tuck are producers. Guests included pop sensations N'Sync, country superstar Pam Tillis, the U.S. Air Force Academy Cadet Chorale and the Denver Young Artists Orchestra. Kathie Lee: Christmas Every Day was broadcast on CBS on December 11 in prime time.
Other movie projects in development include Twang!, a country music spoof; Ordinary Miracles , a holiday story about a lonely judge and an abandoned teenager; and This Just In, a comedy about a hapless small-town news team caught up in a national media event.
"We've moved strategically over the past months to create meaningful opportunities for Imprint in new areas of the entertainment business," Schaetzle said. "As we continue our planned transition into films and television, our goal is to produce memorable, entertaining and high-quality work for the widest possible audience.
"Ultimately," Wunsch said, "these new business moves, though creatively and technically challenging, offer the greatest potential for long-term growth."
Imprint Entertainment, launched in July 1997, is the television, film, and multimedia development, production, and distribution division of Imprint Records. Imprint Records shares trade on the OTC Bulletin Board under the symbol IMPR.
