IBD article. IBM And Qualcomm
Wireless phone pioneer
Qualcomm Inc. might use
an emerging chip
technology from IBM
Corp. for future cell
phones.

President Richard
Sulpizio says Qualcomm is
taking a serious look at
IBM's silicon-germanium -
or SiGe (pronounced
Siggy) -chip. IBM Vice
President Ronald Soicher
confirms that Qualcomm
has evaluated the product.

Date: 2/24/99

Big Blue has been trying to boost SiGe since
the early 1990s. Soicher says SiGE would
help Qualcomm reduce the number of chips
needed in cell phones. That could let
Qualcomm make smaller cell phones with
longer battery life.

Most chips are made from thin wafers of
silicon. But to speed chip circuitry, an
alternative material called gallium arsenide has
been used at times. Silicon-germanium is an
alternative to gallium arsenide that IBM says
is well-suited for wireless devices.

Corralling Qualcomm would be a big win for
IBM, analysts say.

A pact with IBM would also help Qualcomm
keep its ranking as the leading supplier of
chips for a cell phone standard called code
division multiple access. Qualcomm
pioneered CDMA, but it also licensed it to
other companies to build a market. Now
Qualcomm faces competition from a crop of
licensees, including DSP Communications
Inc. and LSI Logic Corp.

Without mentioning IBM, Qualcomm said at
a trade show this month that SiGe chips could
be in its plans by late this year.
