Intel Announces Enterprise Technology Center, Chipset Program for Future Merced Processor

PALM SPRINGS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 24, 1999--Intel Corporation today announced the opening of an Enterprise Technology Center and a cooperative Merced chipset development effort for future IA-64 based servers.
Located in DuPont, Wash., the Enterprise Technology Center will provide a collaborative environment for Intel and enterprise solution providers to co-define and develop specifications and implementations of advanced core technology features for future IA-based server platforms. Through this collective effort, reusable core platform components can be optimized to meet stringent enterprise requirements and be brought to market faster. Industry enterprise providers can expand and maximize their research and development efforts on their own higher value-added differentiated products. Initial Enterprise Technology Center efforts will focus on platform power and cooling, reliability, availability, scalability, and I/O technologies.
"To better serve the demands of the enterprise server market, it is important for Intel to take the entire solution into account and work closely with the industry to provide effective, and robust IA-based products," said John Miner, vice president and general manager, Intel Enterprise Server Group. "It is important to begin this working relationship early in the development process before key architectural hardware and software decisions have been made. These programs emphasize Intel's strong commitment to working with the industry to advance and innovate IA-based enterprise server capabilities."
In addition to working with Intel, participants can lease private workspace within the Enterprise Technology Center for their proprietary product development. They can also utilize the Center's lab resources and Intel's on-site technical support as needed. To date, Bull, Data General, Fujitsu, Hitachi, ICL, NEC, Siemens, Sequent and Unisys have signed memorandums of understanding with Intel regarding participation in the Enterprise Technology Center.
Cooperative Chipset Program for Intel's Future Merced Processor
Intel has also been working with Hitachi, NEC and Siemens for the past two and one-half years on the implementation of a 4-way server chipset to support Intel's future Merced processor. Through collaboration with Hitachi, NEC and Siemens, Intel is developing a robust, high-volume chipset solution that will be made available to the industry concurrent with the Merced processor availability. Hitachi, NEC, and Siemens are each aggressively developing differentiated high-end enterprise Merced processor based systems. In addition, each of these companies has opened an IA Applications Solution Center (ASC) to optimize performance of software applications running on their high-end Merced systems.
Continued successful collaboration with enterprise solution providers is a top priority for Intel in 1999 as it drives for unified enterprise architecture throughout the server industry.
