Boeing finds many investments to yield little-WSJ

NEW YORK, Feb 24 (Reuters) - A quarter of the $13 billion
that Boeing Co is investing in its product lines will
produce no meaningful returns, the Wall Street Journal reported
on Wednesday, citing a study by the company.
The findings will provide the foundation for a financial
overhaul of the aerospace giant as Boeing officials hope to
decide how certain "value-destroying" commercial airplane,
defence and space programmes can be made profitable, the
newspaper reported.
The company plans to expand into jetliner maintenance and
modification work, the paper quoted one senior executive as
saying.
Some conclusions from the recent "sources of value" study,
are expected to be disclosed to investors and analysts at a
Florida conference this week.
The study shows that of the total amount invested in 40
categories of aircraft, rocket and defence-related systems, nine
of those lines of business are expected to produce negative
returns or just break even under current plans, despite the $3.6
billion invested in them.
Seven product areas representing more than $2 billion in
investment are likely to produce negative returns.
Boeing's stock closed up 1-1/8 at 37-3/8 on the New York
Stock Exchange on Tuesday.
