I have heard the Indian middle class estimated at 180 - 200 million.

Now many of them are not really middle class by our standards, but they are rich enough by Indian standards to enjoy some middle class habits, such as moving out of their parents' houses and forming nuclear families.

Many of them, however, are not only rich enough to enjoy cheap amenities like servants, but expensive ones like Western imports. I haven't seen any figures giving income distributions in US dollars.
