Mike: you are welcome. I agree with you that "I don't see that income providing a middleclass lifestyle by US standards." Actually I was just talking about computers, which plays a much more important part in a culture which values education, than say big screen TV etc.

As for the life style with a house and two cars, that is absolutely out of the question for the majority Chinese lived in the cities. There is simply no enough space for that. You have no idea about the pop. density in China's big cities, especially in Shanghai. I would say even if in European countries, most of middle-class people cannot afford a house as big and spacious as Americans here.

Yes, I think the US will be disappointed if they really want to see a nation of ultimate consumption (like Americans) in China.
