<<<What if ATHM flops, how bad will it do to ATHM?
Will it sink the company entirely?

Nope, definately not. Thats the "bright side". Even if they totally mess up they should still grow at a astronomic rate. The flip side, is: why settle for less??

They have so much potential.. they will have a monopoly in all their markets if they move faster and please customers. Humans dont change easily.. thats why AOL will succeed no matter what... once you sign up for an ISP you rarely change. You get used to your email, your chat rooms, or whatever you have used at the ISP since you signed up. Changing is, in a blunt way, a pain in the butt. AOL also has the advantage of its a "content provider", not just an ISP... you never have to leave their service to get anything you need. So if they somehow can make it as fast as cable (say with ISDL) then they will take a big chunk away from ATHM's potential market.

Telephone co.'s right now don't have xDSL ready... but its in beta... and all this time ATHM is wasting away... they are the only high speed access for the next 3 months.. maybe 6... but then there is competition from the telephone high speed companies. And no matter what anyone on this board says about "no way will anyone buy internet over copper wires" thats BS... if the speed is 80% of cable and price is same, and convenience is the same, then the winner will be whoever markets their product the best and gets their FIRST. The bigger problem is if AOL announces an agreement with a nationwide provider like Worldcom to provide xDSL nationwide. Then you have serious competition.

The pie is growing still.. this is a young market... but like in any industry being first always helps... especially when your competition is not there yet. So the next 3-6 months ... would be the best for ATHM to really roll out their product .. and for the cable companies to pay whatever overtime they need to to their technicians to get this done.... quicker.
