America Online Fundamentals < Back Next > Glossary

What does the company do?

Its 16 million subscribers make America Online (AOL) the world's #1 provider of online services.

AOL's 1998 acquisition of CompuServe (now subsidiary CompuServe Interactive Services), which has two million subscribers, boosted the combined services' market share to 60%.

AOL appeals to those seeking entertainment, but CompuServe is geared toward professionals and small-business owners. Flat-rate pricing and growing competition in providing Internet access have led AOL to look beyond subscriber fees for revenues.

It is working to sell advertising on its Web site and is forging marketing agreements with other companies, collecting fees on sales to AOL subscribers. AOL is also buying rival Netscape.
