Matsushita has started production of the new li poly battery, which should prove easier to produce and above all, be thinner than li ion canister batteries. The operation is identical to li ion except that li poly operates on a gel basis instead of liquid. Otherwise, it is identical including the anodes and cathodes, and therefore offers no more charge capacity.
Matsushita expects to gain a 50% share of the growing market. They expect production to reach 300,000/mo by summer, which will grow to 1000,000/mo by fall. One of the first customers, according to US media, will include a PDA manufacturer.
The first battery version weighs 16g , 3.6mm thickness, 35mm wide and 62mm high. Current capacity is 500mAh, voltage 3.7. Other sizes are planned.
Matsushita has sent first design to more than 10 different customers. Also, Sony will start production of their own version soon. |
