This is not to say that sweatshop situations don't exist but that opportunities for both the sweatshop and personal economic advancement exist. Life is what you make of it.

There is a prevalent practice here known as labor subcontracting, in which as much as half of the money a foreign manufacturer thinks he is paying to his local employees actually ends up in the pocket of the subcontractor. The subcontractors are usually well connected with local governments and police forces, and have carefully delineated fiefdoms. Investors who try to do without a subcontractor often experience inexplicable difficulties; workers who rock the boat may suffer severe consequences, including disappearance.

Is life what you make of it? The subcontractor, with his lovely and well-guarded home, luxury car, expensively attired wife & mistress, etc. would doubtless agree. The workers seldom have the opportunity to think about it.
