Most the opinion polls seem to be pro-3Dfx. This one on Gamespot asks, "What chip will power your next 3D card?"
Voodoo3: 54% Undecided: 26% Rage 128: 10% Savage 4: 4% Permedia3: 2% PowerVR 250: 1% Total votes: 10098
Maximum PC asked, "What do you think of the 3Dfx/STB deal?"
As long as 3Dfx makes great hardware, we'll buy it 42.7% It's great for 3Dfx, but no competition is bad for consumers 21.1% It doesn't matter... Voodoo3's gonna be a bust 19.1% 3Dfx just opened the door for nVidia to take over 17.0% Total Opinions: 2067 100.0%
Max PC also ran this which is less encouraging, "What Next Gen Video Card Are You Hot For?"
nVidia TNT2 35.7% 3Dfx Voodoo3 26.2% No Thanks, I'm Set For Now 11.5% Matrox MGA-GXXX 08.3% ATI Rage 128 07.7% 3DLabs Permedia3 05.8% S3 Savage4 04.8% Total Opinions: 2347 100.0% Maximum PC is a power user mag while Gamespot is more mainstream, which I think may explain the different attitudes (though, looking at the results Voodoo 3 could still win in the run-off <g>). Also, the Max PC poll was taken before the release of the V3 reviews.
Regarding dual TNTs, Maximum PC reports that the technology can also be applied to Banshee. This isn't mentioned in the Sharky Extreme article. Well, if Banshee, then why not V3?
"The technology is partially hardware and software and can be applied to other chipsets to make dual S3 Savage3Ds, dual Banshee cards or, uhh, dual S3 ViRGE cards."
