The Sprint news is indeed giving a pop to Ciena this morning. The take-away for me is that Sprint it not doing this out of charity to Ciena. It means that it has not found anyone to match Ciena's technology. (It also probably means that Ciena gave a good price to Sprint, but I discount that a bit because Nettles has insisted that they will not use steep price cuts to keep business, and the firming up of the gross margin bears this out.) IMO, Sprint toyed with the others, Lucent, Alcatel, Nortel, but realized that none of them could deliver a reliable 40 channel system in 1999. By the time the millenium rolls around, Lucent will be delivering its 40 channel systems but Ciena will be going onto its 96 channel system. Ciena's headstart will certainly not last for long, but if the game is to capture marketshare before the explosion in the DWDM market hits full force, Ciena is winning.
