In particular, Milunovich comments that the PC industry used to be concerned with unit growth because it was important to MSFT growth and for disk drive companies, as well as for INTC growth until ASPs cratered. But PC companies must have dollars drive their business models. Market share from IDC and Dataquest focuses on units, not dollars. "Our concern is that the recovery in ASPs predicted beyond 1999 may not occur." He notes that consumers are demanding low-priced machines, such as the under $500 e-machines. Most interesting point? Appliances will be the hot area five years from now and will make PCs look old fashioned. "Like the mainframe market, the PC industry will mature." This report will take some time to sink in.
