why should any country choose IS-95 if the consumers can get far better handsets with GSM

Because the operators are making the decisions and it will cost them much less to start directly with CDMA..

Eight days of standbay time should be plenty for most people. How often do you go somewhere where you can't or don't charge your phone for more than a week?

When the phones are out we'll see how they match up in the real world..
