I'm not wild about Windows either, but to be precise, Windows NT has been available for the Digital/Compaq Alpha chip since NT 3.51 in 1995. Windows 2000 for Alpha will have built in support for running most x86 programs under emulation. However, you really need native alpha software to take advantage of the speed of the processor.

In addition 64-bit Windows is being developed and debugged on Compaq Alpha machines because that's the only hardware currently available that can support it. Merced hardware isn't available yet.

In OS area at least, MSFT has been doing a good job supporting multiple chips platforms. IMO this helps them stay somewhat independent of Intel and keeps developers from unwittingly building in dependencies on a single chip architecture.

I wish their application groups would do as well!
