I need a bit of direction

My laptop was having problems opening web pages. I could log on to my ISP fine. Then when I tried to open a page (tried several different ones) the browsers (both IE and Netscape) would not find the sites. I let them search for quite some time

So, I took initiative and remembered what the techie had to do with my PC when i had problems. Reload Win95. I did this and as it was running setup it would ask if I wanted to keep certain files which were newer than the ones which were on my Win95 disk. I clicked yes to every one of those.

Then on Reboot of the computer it goes direct to wanting to open in safe mode. I try to open in safe mode and it starts going through files:

C:\WINDOWS\system\VMM32\vwin32.VXD
.......................\vcond.VXD
.......................\vxdldr.VXD
.......................\vmcpd.VXD
.......................\VPICD.VXD
.......................\VTD.VXD
.......................\VXDLDR.VXD
.......................\VWIN32.VXD
.......................\VMCPD.VXD
.......................\VCOND.VXD

saying that I may need to run the windows setup program again. Or if the file is included in another software package I may need to reinstall the software which uses that file

After I click past each file it says I need to reload these files for windows to run then it shuts itself down.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this problem. The information on the computer is all backed up so I don't mind loosing any of it if necessary.

thanks
david
